The John James Memorial Foundation, named in memory of one of Canberra's early and distinguished doctors, built and opened the John James Memorial Hospital in 1970 and provided outstanding private hospital care to patients in and around Canberra for almost 40 years. However by 2006, having become uneconomic for the Foundation as a small stand-alone organisation to continue to run the business, the hospital was sold to Calvary Private Health Care, which is a part of the much larger Little Company of Mary Health Care group.

Following the sale, the Foundation was left with minimal debt, a large landholding in Deakin (including all of the hospital land and buildings) and a healthy rental income stream from over 15 individual medical tenants. It has over 120 specialist Doctor Members and is a not-for-profit health promotion charity. Having previously had only one focus; the running of a private hospital, the Foundation now faces an exciting future in establishing a new range of charitable activities including:

  • Through the generosity of its Members, the provision of specialist medical services, on a regular volunteer basis, to remote and rural areas of Australia;
  • Providing a range of educational opportunities for medical and nursing students;
  • Given the long history of the Foundation in Canberra, the provision of support to local health related charities and organisations; and
  • Contributing to the continued success of the Calvary John James Hospital in Deakin.

With a dedicated board, management and membership, the Foundation looks forward to making an extremely valuable contribution to the local Canberra community for many years to come. In this regard, the Foundation is very proud to be a supporter of the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter, which provides a truly life-saving service to the people of Canberra and in surrounding areas.
